MHC Programs Going Strong in 2013

Making Healthy Connections (MHC) is in full swing for 2013! MHC meetings at two program sites are being held twice monthly for our new 2012-2013 session. Boston MHC began in October 2012 and Springfield MHC launched a new program session in January 2013.

Both MHC sites have action-packed calendars planned with the goal of enhancing the health and well-being of youth with disabilities in the Greater Springfield and Greater Boston areas by providing a rich variety of learning experiences, recreational and fitness activities, and social opportunities. Currently 63 youth participants and peer leaders are participating in Making Healthy Connections for 2013.

Youth participants with disabilities and their families have come to rely on MHC programming as one of few sources of support, friendship, and community suited to their unique needs. Comments from youth completing MHC programming in 2012 include the following:

“I learned to be proud of my disability and who I am.”

“This program has enabled me to meet a lot of interesting people. I have learned a great deal about who I am as a person. I know about the services that are available to me. I have enjoyed meeting people from diverse backgrounds and engaging in fun activities.”

“I learned that…I’m not the only person who has disability.”

“I learned how important being healthy is.”

We look forward to another productive and exciting year of MHC as we work together to promote healthy lifestyles and successful transitions for youth with disabilities and their families.
