Best practices for inclusive communication & disability etiquette

Young man gesturing with his hands while attempting to communicate a thoughtIn our years of training, we’ve noticed that one of the biggest barriers preventing the inclusion of people with disabilities is such a simple thing: well-meaning people are afraid of putting their foot in their mouth and offending someone! People don’t know how to communicate in a way that’s inclusive and welcoming to people with disabilities, and that creates a barrier difficult to get beyond.

In this training, attendees will learn and practice inclusive communication strategies, as well as basic disability etiquette. Learning how to communicate inclusively increases comfort and confidence while interacting with all types of people, and it can help you feel empowered when interacting with people with disabilities. By combining inclusive communication strategies and disability etiquette, you can feel ready to communicate in a variety of settings with a variety of people.

Topics include: person first language, using a strengths-based approach, inclusive language, understanding how body language and tone can impact understanding and perception.
