It’s been a crazy month so far with all these snow days! And don’t forget about Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day this weekend, not to mention upcoming February vacations for many students. With all of these special occasions in mind, we’ve recommended lots of fun activities for you and the whole family!
Harvard Coop for Kids: Valentine’s Day. On Valentine’s Day, head over to the the Harvard Coop from 11am-12pm. Kids aged 6 and their mentors are invited to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a story and craft!
Valentine’s Crafternoon. From 2-4pm on Valentine’s Day, you can make homemade cards at the Adams Street Branch of the Boston Public Library! Options include coffee filter flowers, queen of hearts hats, and string art heart cards. Great for all ages.
20th Annual Bugs Bunny Film Festival. Anytime during Feb. 14th-21st, bring your mentor or mentee to this awesome annual film festival at the Brattle Theatre! Tickets are only $7-$10 each, and the festival features three programs: The All Bugs Revue, Daffy Duck and Friends, and Looney Tunes Revue.
Winter Vacation Week Program – MIT. From Feb. 16th-Feb 21st, the MIT Museum offers engineering-specific activities, workshops, and afternoon demonstrations led by MIT students. Students in grades 6-12 are welcome to attend this FREE event – just remember to register.
“Morningstar Access” Boston Children’s Museum. On February 16th, from 8 a.m. – 10 a.m, Boston Children’s Museum invites children with special and medical needs to their “Morningstar Access” program. This program allows children to explore the museum in an uncrowded environment with risk for infection and large crowds. Pre-registration is required and is limited to 100 Guests. February Vacation Program: Making a Difference. From February 17th-20th, the Mary Baker Eddy Library is hosting activities on how to make a difference in someone else’s life or the community. Kids can create goodwill projects and crafts, learn about other kids’ projects that had an impact on their communities, and attend morning/afternoon sessions on How You Can Make a Difference and Make Your Own News Story. RSVP is required for some activities, but admission is free!
Free Creative Writing Workshops with 826 Boston. On Feb. 17th-20th, 826 Boston offers free creative writing workshops to children and teens aged 6-18 who are interested in writing, theater, screenwriting, math, poetry — or want to try something new over February vacation! Workshops include a range of different themes, such as slam poetry, writing your own imaginary world, and completing a screenplay! 826 Boston asks for a $20 deposit if students can afford it, along with a completed registration form (which can be found online).
Barefoot Puppets’ Dreamtime: Tales from Down Under. Everyone aged 4 or older is invited to this awesome performance inspired by Aboriginal folktales! Performances will be during Feb. 20th-22nd at 32 Station St. in Brookline. Learn how the emu became a flightless bird, why the platypus has such an odd appearance, and encounter a huge ocean-swallowing frog! Tickets are $8 for members and $12 for general admission.
American Sign Language “Critters & Creators.” On February 21st, Boston Children’s Museum offers ASL-interpreted “Critters and Creators” presentations at 1:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m! The theme of Boston Children’s Museum’s Vacation Week Program is “not a box” – come meet animals that have their own special relationships with boxes, such as toys, homes or a specially evolved part of their bodies. MFA Vacation Week Adventures. During February vacation, enjoy free admission at the Museum of Fine Arts! Kids aged 4-17 are invited for arts and crafts, story-telling, family tours, and special world dance and music performances at 11:30am and 1:30pm! Check out the dazzling range of performances from flamenco dancing to traditional Chinese dance! Best of all, the MFA has extended hours on Wednesday, when it’s open till 8pm.
Lunar New Year Festival: Quincy. On March 1st from 10:30am-4pm, head over to one of the most popular and largest celebrations of the Lunar New Year in Massachusetts: the Lunar New Year Festival! There’ll be paper making, Chinese caligraphy, a Frozen-themed Children’s area, and over 300 performers! And it’s free. The event will be located at North Quincy High School at 316 Hancock St., Quincy, MA, 02171.
