Youth and Family Disability Resources: April 2014

This month’s resources include a wide variety of tools to support youth and families with disabilities. From independent living support services to volunteer and career opportunities, we hope there’s a resource that just right for you!

Branching Out, LLC

Do you know a young adult with disabilities transitioning to independent living in Boston? Branching Out LLC is a long-term assisted living program that helps young adults develop the skills necessary to live independently. Branching Out advisors offer a complete range of services including house keeping, grocery shopping, meal preparation, and utilizing community resources. Fill out an application today!

Wings for Autism: Logan Airport

On April 5th, 2014, families who have children with an autism spectrum disorder will have the opportunity to practice a trip to the airport. Families will be issued boarding passes and then be able to walk through a fully staffed security checkpoint, wait in the terminal, and board a plane. Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI)

The ICI at UMass Boston is a great resource center that supports the rights of children and adults with disabilities to participate in all aspects of the community. The center works to employ people with disabilities in community settings, support children and young adults with special health care needs, and promote technology that aids participation in school and the community. Beeping Spring Egg Hunt

Looking for a fun accessible egg hunt this Spring? Look no further! The Massachusetts Association of Parents of the Visually Impaired and the Perkins School for the Blind are holding an egg hunt for children who use wheelchairs or are visually impaired. The hunt will be at the Grousbeck Center on the Perkins campus in Watertown on April 12th at 10am.

Shops at the Prudential Center Volunteer Expo

The Prudential Center in Boston is holding their annual Volunteer Expo on April 10th from 5:30-7:30pm at the Huntington Arcade. The expo is a celebration of National Volunteer Week from April 6th-12th.  PYD will be one of the featured organizations at the expo along with Big Brothers Big Sisters, JVS Boston, Bikes Not Bombs, and many, many more. We hope to see you there!

Inclusion at the Museum of Science

The Museum of Science in Boston is asking for your help to create an inclusive environment that is inviting, engaging, and accessible for everyone. They are seeking visitors with a range of disabilities who would be willing to test new exhibit prototypes and explore the museum. Testing could last anywhere between 30 and 90 minutes and will always include free admission to the Museum of Science exhibit halls for the day and free parking in the Museum’s garage.

SPED Child and Teen Internship

Do you know somebody looking for an internship who is interested in talking and writing about special needs events?
