Transition Events: Summer Job & Self-Advocacy Workshops

Transition Events: Spring 2013Transitioning to adulthood can be a difficult time for everyone, and it can be especially difficult for youth with disabilities. Once youth leave school or turn 22-24 years old, services cut off that had been in place their whole life, and youth and families are left trying to figure out what to do next.

In order to help with this transition, the Mentor Match team hosts a number of events specifically around transition-to-adulthood topics. These events are a part of PYD’s ongoing collaboration with the Mass Rehabilitation Commission.

Over the next few months, we have two transition events planned: a summer job workshop, and a self-advocacy training. You can find more information on them below.

Summer Job Workshop
Saturday, May 11th from 1pm to 3pm

Looking for a summer job? Not sure where to look? This workshop will provide participants with tips and information on finding job listings, creating and refining a resume, and navigating job interviews. The workshop will take place within our offices at 95 Berkeley St in Boston.

Self-Advocacy Training
Saturday, June 29th from 1pm to 3pm

Whether in or out of school, it’s important to know how to stand up for yourself. This training will help teach participants on how to self-advocate in a variety of settings, and provide practice with disclosure.

These events are free, and they are open to anyone with a disability between the ages of 14 and 24. If you are interested in attending either event, please email Steve Slowinski (sslowinski@pyd.org) to sign up.

Ana, thanks for replying! I’ll certainly keep my eyes peeled for any opportunities that might make sense for Igor. In the meantime, did you see our jobs resources packet that we put together recently? If not, I’d check them out…they might be of help.
