How to encourage positive behavior in youth with disabilities

A teenager and adult talk quietly togetherHave you ever struggled to a child to engage in your program? Ever had to deal with an unruly child that just won’t follow directions? We’ve all been there, and it can sometimes be a real challenge to get youth to positively engage in your program. This can be frustrating for both you and them, and their misbehavior can keep them from getting the full benefit of the activities you’re providing.

So what do you do? Designing inclusive programming requires understanding different types of disabilities and the supports available to meet the needs of participants. It also requires you to understand how to support positive behavior in all youth, and ways to manage challenging behavior when it does occur.

This training will help participants understand the root causes of behavior, and will provide a framework for how youth programs can support and promote positive behavior in youth of all abilities or disabilities. You’ll leave with a greater understanding of what behavior means, how to address it, and ways programs can proactively bring out the best in their participants.

Attendees will also learn general characteristics and support information related to the following types of disabilities: physical, sensory, developmental, intellectual, learning, and mental health conditions. The more you know, the better you’ll be able to support and include all youth!
