This month we offer a variety of resources. From job accommodation to career readiness to therapy for young athletes with disabilities, these resources will help youth feel prepared and confident. And, of course, there’s an event to get ready for the holidays!
Autism Consortium Research Symposium & Resource Fair:
This event is for families, scientists, clinicians, and advocates. The day will begin with a Research and Resource Fair featuring local autism organizations that offer resources on the transition to adulthood, as well as information on enrolling in the latest research studies. It will be held in the Martin Conference Center at Harvard Medical School on November 5th.
BU Depression Study for Children
If you know a child who appears sad or down, has lost pleasure in fun activities, feels hopeless, is more irritable than usual, has withdrawn from families and friends, and is aged 7 – 14, they may qualify for the Systems of Support Study. This study offers a brief treatment for children focused on improving the child’s ability to cope with distress and increasing positive mood and payments following completion of 3 interviews. Autistic Author Robyn Steward speaking in Boston
Robyn Steward, author of The Independent Woman’s Handbook to Super Safe Living on the Autistic Spectrum was diagnosed with Asperger’s syndrome at age 11, and has nine other disabilities. Robyn is now 27 and provides training, consulting and mentoring to professionals, families, and people on the autistic spectrum. She will be speaking on Wednesday, Nov. 6th at 4pm on the 2nd floor of the Boston Conservatory building on 31 Hemenway Street.
School-to-Career for Disabilities: Fall 2013
Triangle’s School-to-Career Job Club is for ages 16-29 with disabilities looking for a job, Mondays from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. at Triangle in Malden. Free to attend but all attendees are expected to present themselves professionally and fully apply themselves to the job search. This site is the best site for questions about workplace accommodations or the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and related legislation. It offers different ways to accommodate many different disabilities. This site is an extremely useful resource for kids, parents, teachers, and employers.
Christopher Columbus Park Trellis Lighting
This is one of the best events to get into the holiday spirit! Watch as 12 decorated trees along with lighted pine boughs that highlight the Kennedy Rose Garden are revealed. Chalk Talk Sport-Based Group Therapy
This resource helps to foster healthy living for young athletes with disabilities. Doc Wayne offers an experiential group counseling experience for those who wish to participate in a non-traditional modality of action-oriented counseling rather than traditional talk therapy. Each group occurs weekly and is implemented with 6-12 participants, male and/or female, ages 6-22.
