Youth in Preparation for Independence Success Story
A high school student who had recently moved to the United States joined the YIPI group approximately eight years ago. She came from a country where people with disabilities were not expected to go to school, have a job, or participate in community life. She became one of our most active YIPI participants, always asking questions in the group to learn more about her rights in this country and what resources there were to help her become more independent. This young woman has gone on to become a Peer Leader in our program and was chosen to be a representative in the National Leadership Council. Most recently, she worked as an intern in Senator Kennedy's office in Boston and attends college. She also continues to enjoy skiing, which she first started though the annual YIPI ski trip. She hopes to become a lawyer someday.
