Partners Online Success Story

POL participant surfs the web A young man who has been active in our program for many years has recently joined the new Partners Online program. He has had a wonderful mentor for over six years who has become one of his best friends. Communicating over the computer via e-mail has helped them keep in close contact with each other. They even play chess together online and have tried playing in their own private chat room. These email games have been known to last for weeks! More recently, this young man has started mentoring two mentees himself. He helps two younger children who are both eight years old and have cerebral palsy to see all the things that they can do based on his example. They all like Boston sports teams and have gone to Celtics and Red Sox games. After the games, they exchange pictures over the Internet. They also like to bowl together and have gone several times. All of the group¨s planning is done through email and chat, which is an important way for them to keep in touch. The young mentor explains: "I am very lucky to have such a great mentor and I hope I can be as good to my mentees as my mentor has been to me. The computer really has been so important in our keeping in touch, because I am non verbal, so the computer is like my telephone."
