Two parents whose son participated in the YIPI youth group joined the parent group a number of years ago. They became very active members of the parent group and enjoyed meeting other parents who shared common issues and could problem solve together. One aspect of the parent group they found particularly helpful was the guest speaker professionals who came to talk on current issues in child development. At one of the meetings they met an advocate who spoke on Independent Living. They subsequently worked with the advocate to help them address access issues with the school their son attended. They learned about their son's rights to have access to all aspects of the school experience, had all his classrooms moved to accessible locations, and mediated curriculum changes to make their son's program more challenging so he would be better prepared for college. Their son has since gone on to become a peer leader in PYD, serve on their townwide Disability Commission as well as successfully attend college. He most recently was awarded the 2003 Rotary Club "Citizens Who Care" Award for his contribution in helping others.
