This stage happens in different ways and at different times for
each mentoring relationship. Some mentors and mentees choose to
stay in touch for years after the formal interaction ends. There
are usually two main reasons the relationship ends:
- Reason 1: The mentor or mentee chooses to end the relationship
- Reason 2: The goals of the relationship are achieved or the time commitment ends
The mentoring relationship can either end on time and on purpose or end early.
Here are some tips for handling both situations.
Ending on time and on purpose:
Discuss expectations if you choose to have continued contact.
- Set realistic expectations
- Reach a new agreement that can work for both of you
- Discuss how often you hope to communicate
Celebrate your successes.
- Talk about your relationship and what you've accomplished
- Reminisce about your time together: the fun times, rough times and sweet ones
Ending early:
First, here are 2 common reasons this occurs:
- Major life changes, such as health concerns, major school or career shifts, a new baby, or a major move that make continuing impossible
- One of the pair decides to end the relationship
If the relationship ends early:
- Celebrate what you've accomplished
- Acknowledge that there is probably some disappointment for you both
- Make sure your mentor knows his or her efforts are appreciated
REMEMBER to call PYD staff for help with these and all issues related to your mentoring relationship. Keep PYD informed if your relationship is ending.
